A 17-Year-Old Girl Wrecked My $140,000 Truck. Her Grandfather Begged Me Not to Call the Insurance Company

She came through the four-way stop at forty miles an hour and never touched the brakes.

The old pickup hit my front fender, spun once, and stopped in a cloud of dust and steam. My new truck, the one I’d waited eight months for, folded like a soda can.

I got out shaking. So did she.

Seventeen, maybe. Ponytail, work boots, a mechanic’s rag still hanging from her back pocket. She was crying before she reached me.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine,” I said. “Are you?”

She nodded, then looked at her truck and started crying harder.

I’m Dante Salcedo. Forty-seven, single, and the owner of Salcedo Freight, three hundred trucks running out of Amarillo, Texas. I know accidents. I have a claims department, an insurance agent on speed dial, and an accident lawyer who sends my office a fruit basket every Christmas.

That’s when a second truck skidded up behind us. An old man jumped out faster than any old man should, wearing grease-stained coveralls with the name ORVILLE stitched on the chest.

He looked at the girl. He looked at my truck. He looked at me.

Then he put his hand on my arm.

“Mister,” he said quietly, “please don’t call anyone. Her name’s Kaylee. I’m her grandfather. And my insurance lapsed in March.”

“Sir, I have to—”

“If they find out she was driving my truck uninsured,” he said, “they’ll take her away from me.”
