My 80-Year-Old Mother Had Never Seen the Ocean. I Had Six Days to Get Her to My Island Before She Signed Away Her House

“I’m not getting on an airplane, Marshall. I don’t care if you own it.”

My mother said this from the front porch of the house in Hutchinson, Kansas, where she had lived for fifty-eight years. She was eighty. Her suitcase was already packed for the assisted living place across town.

Moving day was next Monday.

The closing on her house was Monday too.

I’m Marshall Keane. Fifty-one, divorced, a grown son and a mother who still tells me to stand up straight. I built a crop insurance software company above a hardware store and sold it eight years ago. With the money I bought an island in the Florida Keys. Twelve acres, a white house, a dock, and more ocean than one man needs.

She’d never come.

“I’ve seen pictures,” she always said.

Then, last week, boxing up her kitchen, she held one of those pictures for a long time and said, very quietly, “I’ve never actually seen the ocean, you know. Not once.”

Eighty years old. Never seen the ocean.

So I made her an offer. Six days. My truck, no planes. Kansas to the Keys and back before she signed the papers.

She looked at the suitcase. She looked at me.

“One condition,” she said. “We take the long way.”

“Which long way?”

“Through Biloxi, Mississippi.”

“Why Biloxi?”

She picked up her purse and walked to the truck without answering.
