At 78, My Father Wanted to Foster a 10-Year-Old Boy. The Caseworker Said Yes on One Condition. Me.

Her name was Annette Krall, and she had been a foster care caseworker in Umatilla County for twenty-two years. She did not smile easily.

She sat at our kitchen table and asked me questions for an hour. My work hours. My health. My finances. Whether I’d ever been arrested. Whether I’d ever been married. Why not.

“Mr. Bracken,” she said finally, “do you actually want to do this?”

“Honestly, ma’am? I don’t know.”

She wrote that down.

My estate lawyer in Pendleton was more direct. If I agreed to be standby guardian, I’d need to update my will. Set up a trust for the boy in case anything happened to both of us. Increase my life insurance and name the trust as the beneficiary. Add him to my health insurance plan as a dependent if it came to that.

“It’s a real commitment, Cort,” he said. “On paper and off.”

I met Jaxon two weeks later.

He was small for ten, with hair that hadn’t been cut properly in a long time and a backpack he didn’t put down, even at the table. He didn’t talk. He didn’t eat much.

But when I took him out to the shed and showed him the old 1952 tractor my grandfather had bought new, he walked all the way around it three times. Then he looked at me.

“Does it run?”

“It used to.”

“Can we make it?”

It was the first thing he’d said all day.

That weekend, he and my father and I took the carburetor apart on the workbench. Jaxon held the parts like they were made of glass. My father explained every piece. I watched them both, and something in my chest I didn’t have a name for started to hurt.

On Sunday night, Ms. Krall called.

“Mr. Bracken. There’s something I didn’t tell you. Jaxon has an older sister. Brianna, fifteen. She’s in a group home in Hermiston. They were separated in the last placement.”

She paused.

“He won’t stay anywhere without her. He’s told every family. That’s why he’s been moved four times.”
