My $2 Million Bull Broke Through the Fence Into the Convent Next Door. The Nuns Refused to Give Him Back

Cattle breeder with the elderly nun and other sisters watching the bull in a pasture at sunset

I sat down with Sister Agatha and Father Dominic at the kitchen table that night, with bread still warm from the oven between us.

I made an offer.

Not to buy the land. The sisters didn’t want to sell, and I didn’t want to own a convent.

I offered to lease it.

All hundred and forty acres of pasture, for twenty years, at a fair rate, paid every January. My crew would restore the fences and the creek and the barn. Thunder and sixty of my best cows would live there. The sisters would get a share of every calf born on their land.

And I’d fix the chapel roof. All of it. My donation.

Father Dominic read the lease twice. Then he read the numbers a third time.

“This covers the property taxes,” he said slowly. “And their insurance. And a good deal more.”

“That’s the idea, Father.”

He looked at Sister Agatha. She looked at him over her glasses, the way I imagine she once looked at seventh-graders.

“The sisters,” she said, “will vote on it.”

They voted that night. Six to nothing.

The storage company never got its answer.

That was two years ago. The pasture at Mercy Hill is the best grass in the county now. Thunder has sired forty-one calves there. The sisters named every one of them after a saint, which makes the paperwork for the registry very interesting.

The new chapel roof is slate. The bread sells out every Saturday by nine.

My insurance agent rewrote Thunder’s policy to include a convent. She says it’s the strangest rider she’s ever written.

Last Sunday, I found him exactly where I knew I’d find him. Lying in the chapel garden, chin on Sister Agatha’s knee, both of them half asleep in the sun.

“You know,” she said without opening her eyes, “the sisters have been thinking.”

“About what, Sister?”

“He really should have a proper name.”

So now, officially, in the registry, my two-million-dollar bull is called Brother Thunder.
