A Tech Billionaire’s Family Rented My Entire Guest Ranch for a Week. By Wednesday, Their Lawyers Had Arrived by Helicopter

“How on earth did you get up here?” I said.

“Your wrangler brought me up at noon,” said Bernard. “I asked him not to tell you. I wanted to talk to my son alone. I assumed one of them would come. I hoped it would be both.”

Whitney stood in the doorway, frozen.

“Sit down, Whitney,” her father said. “Please. I owe you both something.”

So we sat. All four of us around a woodstove in a log cabin at nine thousand feet, while the wind came down off the peaks.

Bernard told them the truth.

Yes, he’d signed a trust last month. Yes, it left everything to a foundation. He’d signed it angry, after a board meeting where his children had voted against each other for the hundredth time.

“I brought you here to see if I’d made a mistake,” he said. “I watched you move those cattle together. I watched you laugh at Hoyt. And today I watched both of you come after each other up a mountain in the dark.”

His voice wavered for the first time all week.

“I spent forty years teaching you to compete. I’d like to spend whatever I have left teaching you to stop.”

On Thursday, the lawyers redrafted everything at my dining table.

Whitney and Brooks would serve as co-trustees. Together, or not at all. Half the estate would still go to the foundation, which the two of them would run side by side. The company would be sold, and the money would go into the trust.

The lawyers left Friday. The helicopter took off from my north pasture and blew horse manure all over their loafers.

On Saturday, Whitney and Brooks moved the cattle back down from the summer pasture by themselves. Not a single argument.

Bernard and I watched from the porch.

“Thank you, Mr. Montague,” he said.

“I didn’t do anything, sir. I just put them on horses.”

He smiled and handed me an envelope. Inside was a reservation deposit.

Same week next year. All three of them.
